If you haven’t been to New York City lately, than boy are you missing a show. American Apparel, known for it’s nearly nude models has managed to stop New Yorkers in their tracks and that’s hard to do.
With a new window display for Valentines Day, the brand has decided to dress their mannequins in sheer under and full grown bushes. Many have stopped and stared, only to wonder why?
A representative of the brand has told ELLE Magazine, “the unshaven mannequins were meant to celebrate “natural beauty. We created it to invite passersby to explore the idea of what is ‘sexy’ and consider their comfort with the natural female form. This is the same idea behind our advertisements which avoid many of the Photoshopped and airbrushed standards of the fashion industry.”
American Apparel’s display has launched a discussion among the media and celebrities; including The New York Times and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Is this such a bad idea? To portray women as they really look? It is nice to have a fashion brand show a display of obtainable beauty, rather than something that is a mere fantasy, which disappoints millions of women when they cannot live up to the beauty standards of the industry. It is refreshing to see a brand embrace the reality of women.
